Civics Education Network

The Civics Education Network is dedicated to improving political education in Ontario by supporting teachers and students of civics and politics across the province. Our programming is designed to support the excellent work already being done in our public schools.

Teacher Symposium

Every year the Civics Education Network hosts a full-day symposium for teachers of civics and politics. Taking place in October, teachers gather in the council chambers of Toronto City Hall to participate in a series of workshops, listen to distinguished speakers and share resources. The symposium has become our yearly kickoff for our programming.

We are pleased to announce that our annual Teacher Symposium for 2009 ~ Before they Vote: Engaging Young Citizens in School and Beyond, will take place on Monday October 5th. A number of improvements have been included in this year's program, including a vastly improved lunch. We are also excited to announce that we will be holding our first ever panel discussion as part of the event. It is our pleasure to welcome the following distinguished guests as members of the panel:

  • Dave Meslin, founder of the Toronto Public Space Committee
  • Peter MacLeod, Principal at MASS LBP
  • Rudyard Griffiths, Co-Founder of The Dominion Institute
  • Sarah McCoubrey, Executive Director of the Ontario Justice Education Network
  • This year's workshops are:

  • Teaching the (Fun)damentals of Civics
  • Beyond Charity
  • People Power Participation
  • As part of the Symposium we are asking every attendee to submit their "best of" resource electronically to symposium@civicsnetwork.ca. They will be compiled and shared with all of the teachers at the conference through USB Drives which will be given out free of charge at the conference. We are also including a collection of other resources in the symposium packages. Lunch will include the opportunity to informally talk with representatives from a variety of NGOs.

Registration is done through email or over the phone. Send the following information to symposium@civicsnetwork.ca or call 416-995-0157.

  • The cost for this incredible day of workshops and resources is only $40, including lunch. Any teacher can bring along a faculty of education student for only $20. Students may also attend on their own for $30. Spaces are extremely limited in order to ensure an intimate experience, so register early. "Best of" resources are due by October 1. Payment may be made by cash or cheque on the day of the symposium. Receipts will be provided then.
